Breast cancer patients who are postmenopausal and are receiving endocrine treatment may be at increased risk of joint issues such as arthritis. This increased risk may be associated with the significant drop in estrogen levels that patients experience while undergoing endocrine treatment. Past studies have linked estrogen deficiency with poor joint health. Previous use of hormone replacement therapy or hormone-receptor positivity, previous chemotherapy, obesity, and past treatment with the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole increase the risk of breast cancer patient developing joint problems. An awareness and understanding of a woman’s increased risk for joint problems during endocrine treatment can help clinicians and patients proactively manage joint health.
