Overweight adults who are looking to shed pounds can do so without compromising their bone health, according to a recent Louisiana study. In a study of 46 healthy, overweight adults with an average age of 37, participants spent 6 months eating a restricted or low calorie diet, with some adding exercise to their daily routine. While study participants managed to average over a 10% body weight reduction, they did not exhibit any change in bone mineral density for their total body or in the hip, as compared to the control group which ate a normal healthy diet during the 6-month study. All study participants ate a diet containing the recommended levels of vitamins and minerals that contained 30% fat, 15% protein, and 55% carbohydrates, as recommended by the American Heart Association. By taking in the proper amount of nutrients, overweight adults can safely significantly reduce their body mass without experiencing significant bone loss. Aerobic exercise did not appear to affect bone health in individuals on a weight loss program.
