Joachim Kalden has been Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Department of Internal Medicine III and the Institute for Clinical Immunology at the Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, since 1977. After gaining his MD from the University of Tübingen in 1967, he spent 4 years as a Research Fellow in the MRC-Institute for Therapeutics and Endocrinology at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Back in Germany, he finished his specialization in internal medicine at the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Immunology at the Medical School in Hanover. From 1974 until 1977, he worked as a consultant physician at the Department of Internal Medicine. In 1977, he was appointed as Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Department of Internal Medicine III and the Institute for Clinical Immunology, Medical Faculty, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Professor Kalden was and still is a member of many national and international scientific committees: Thus, he has served as EULAR President from 2001 to 2003, at present he is immediate Past-President, he was President of the Board of Trustees of the Deutsche Rheumaforschungszentrum Berlin from 1994 to 2003, he has served as a member of the Presidents of the Max-Planck Society for Clinical Research, he is Chairman of the Curatorship of the Carol Nachman Award Wiesbaden.
Professor Kalden is/has been on the Editorial/Advisory Boards of several rheumatology/immunology and other medical journals including Arthritis & Rheumatism, Journal of Clinical Immunology and Experimental Immunology, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, Journal of Molecular Medicine, and Immunobiology. He is past editor of Rheumatology International.
Prof. Kalden has received many awards including: the honorary doctorate of the Medical Faculty Charité Berlin in 1988, the membership of the Bavarian Academy of Science in 1999, the Bayerische Verdienstorden in 2000, the ACR Master Award in 2003, and he is an honorary member of national and international societies in rheumatology and immunology.
