Stefan Lohmander is professor and senior consultant in orthopaedic surgery at the Department of Orthopaedics at Lund University Hospital, Lund University, Sweden. He received his basic training and MD and PhD degrees at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. After serving as a visiting scientist at NIH in Bethesda, he moved to the Department of Orthopaedics at Lund University. He is the PI of the Lund Osteoarthritis Research Group, focusing on basic and clinical aspects of osteoarthritis (OA), has published more than 200 scientific papers and serves on the editorial board of several international journals. He is a past president of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International, a recipient of the 1994 OARSI award for clinical research and the 2004 ORS Arthur Steindler Award for significant contributions to the understanding of musculoskeletal disease and injury. Research projects being studied are divided into three major areas:
- Risk factors and disease mechanisms of OA on gene, molecule and patient level (Inheritance and Genetics of OA, Identification of Proteolytic Mechanisms in Degradation of Cartilage in OA, Risk Factors for OA after Joint Injury)
- Methods for Monitoring Outcome of OA (Molecular Markers as Surrogate Outcome in OA, Patient-relevant Outcome Measures in OA)
- Treatment of OA - Examining Old and New Interventions for OA in Clinical Trials (Reconstructive Knee Surgery, Disease-modifying OA Therapy, Symptomatic OA Therapy)
The Lund Osteoarthritis Research Group consists of specialists in orthopaedic surgery, rheumatology, radiology, physical therapy, nursing, biochemistry and genetics.
