Researchers at St Thomas' Hospital in London investigated the prevalence, demographics, fracture site, and rate of vertebral fracture recognition by radiologists on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images of the chest. Three radiologists reviewed images of the thoracic spine of 200 patients who had undergone MDCT examinations of the chest. Female patients totaled 48% of the study participants, and there was an average age of 61 years. Of the 70 patients who suffered fractures, 53% occurred in the lower thoracic region. The overall recognition rate by the radiologists was 6 (9% of total fractures). The importance of fracture identification needs to be emphasized to avoid such significant underreporting.
