Vertobroplasty provides significant pain relief for osteoporosis patients suffering from spinal fractures. The procedure involves injecting medical-grade bone cement into a fractured vertebra. The cement stabilizes the spinal fracture and provides pain relief. Vertobroplasty can be used for patients who do not respond to conventional medical therapy. Though vertobroplasty does not help in preventing future fractures, it also does not increase the risk of new fractures in vertebrae adjacent to the treated vertebra. Osteoporosis patients with compression fractures often experience terrible pain and lose the ability to perform basic daily tasks. Recent study results, which are being presented at the annual scientific meeting of the Society of International Radiology, show an 8.6 point decrease in pain, based on an 11-point scale. The study followed 884 patients over 5 years. The osteoporosis patients who had their compression fractures treated with vertobroplasty reported significantly less pain after treatment and a renewed ability to perform everyday tasks, such as washing and dressing themselves.
