Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois assessed the use of non-opioid analgesics (NOAs) in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, and their impact on health-related quality of life for osteoarthritis patients. The relationship of pain severity, physical function, and health-related quality of life to NOA use was analyzed to determine what factors predict use of NOAs. In a 1-year longitudinal study, researchers evaluated NOA dose, physical function, and health-related quality of life for patients with medial knee osteoarthritis. Data shows that physical functioning and health-related quality of life are predictive of NOA use and dosage, but pain severity is not. The median NOA dose was found to decline over the 12-month period, but not in reaction to physical function, health-related quality of life, or pain severity changes.
