From the Popular Press: What Your Patients are Reading:
According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, workers who spend most of their time outdoors and are overexposed to the sun are not getting regular exams to detect early warning signs of skin cancer. Of all workers surveyed, only 15% had ever visited a dermatologist for a skin exam, and outdoor workers were the least likely sector of the workforce to have their skin examined. Outdoor occupations include farm operators, managers, and workers, forestry and fishing occupations, construction laborers, and workers in the mining industry. Skin cancer can be a life-threatening condition, therefore early detection is critical in successfully treating the disease. Workers who are routinely exposed to ultraviolet light for long periods of time are considered high-risk for developing skin cancer and, thus, should be targeted for screening programs.
