Primary ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is rarely seen in patients, while secondary OA of the ankle is rather common. Researchers in the department of radiology at the ORTON Orthopaedic Hospital in Helsinki, Finland sought to determine if OA of the ankle is a side effect of primary knee OA. Based on analysis of mechanical axis radiographs, researchers concluded that as OA of the knee progresses, it can change the alignment of the entire extremity, leading to degenerative changes in the ankle joint. Tilt of the talocrural joint was found in a significant number of knee OA patients. The greatest the degree of the tilt, the greater the degeneration of the joint. Such degeneration often led to ankle OA.
