The European Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and Myeloma Euronet are collaborating to call attention to the importance of early diagnosis of myeloma. The partnership of these two organizations represents the collaboration between orthopedists and oncologists that is being called for in this effort to raise myeloma awareness. Multiple myeloma, an incurable but treatable form of bone marrow cancer, often goes undiagnosed in patients for many years. Bone pain is one of the most common symptoms of myeloma. EFORT and Myeloma Euronet are stressing that orthopedists who have patients complaining of bone or back pain should check for myeloma before treating the pain. Other symptoms of myeloma include anemia and renal failure. Since back pain can be indicative of several types of cancers, including pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, and multiple myeloma, it is critical for orthopedists to consider other medical disciplines when diagnosing patients.
