From the Popular Press: What Your Patients are Reading:
After numerous doctors complained about a high failure rate in their patients, Zimmer Holdings suspended sales of its artificial hip socket known as the Durom cup. The artificial hip component has been used in more than 12,000 surgeries since it was introduced in the US in 2006, and while many doctors report high success rates with the product, others have had to perform replacement surgery on patients in which the socket failed. Hundreds more replacement surgeries are expected to be needed in the coming years for patients who have already been implanted with the Durom cup. After investigating doctors’ claims, Zimmer announced that the product was not defective, however, it can be difficult for even experienced surgeons to implant. The company is planning to commence with specialized training for doctors on how to properly implant the Durom cup, after which they will resume sales of the product. Zimmer Holdings is the biggest producer of orthopedic devices in the US.
