The baby boomer generation has been much more active throughout their lifetimes than generations before them, and their joints are now starting to feel the consequences. Greater involvement in sports and other physical activities may be keeping their hearts healthy, but their joints are feeling the consequences. Arthritis in the feet and ankles appears to be the most common sites for baby boomers. Orthopedists and surgeons are recommending treatments ranging from icing the joints to undergoing surgery. The best way to prevent long-term pain from arthritis is to begin treatment early. By ignoring the pain and letting it get worse, patients diminish their chance for controlling the pain. Patients can be provided with supportive devices to insert inside their shoes, or instructed to restrict their activity in order to curb the onset of arthritic pain. In the case of arthritis, being proactive can save one’s self from long-term pain down the road.
