From the Popular Press: What Your Patients are Reading:

In accordance with a drug safety bill passed by Congress last year, the US FDA has begun compiling a public list of prescription drugs that are under investigation for potential safety problems. The list is part of an effort to keep consumers and doctors better informed of ongoing safety investigations. Some of the drugs currently posted on the list include the blood thinner heparin, which was recalled earlier this year, and some immune-suppressing medications that are being investigated for a link to cancer in young patients. Tysabri, an immunosuppressant used to treat multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease, is being studied for a potential link to melanoma. The list is being compiled based on reports the FDA has received from patients, doctors, and hospitals. Although publicizing a list of drugs with potential safety hazards is a positive step in consumer awareness, some are worried about the effects the list might have on consumers. As it stands now, the list does not contain comprehensive information on any of he drugs or the side effects being studied. It may cause unnecessary panic by consumers who are taking medications on the list. Consumers who are worried about one or more of their prescription medications should not discontinue use without discussing it with the prescribing doctor. A healthcare practitioner can help consumers make better sense of the FDA’s list.
