The tests will cost roughly the same amount as a standard MRI, and results can be ready in as little as one day. Osteoarthritis in the most common form of arthritis, and is the top disabler of the baby boomer generation. Previous to this finding, there was no known way to diagnose osteoarthritis before severe symptoms set in, when irreversible joint damage has already occurred. Standard MRIs are not capable of providing diagnostic information for mild joint pain, but the new modified MRI will enable diagnoses of early osteoarthritis to be made based on mild pain.  Appropriate intervention methods can then be taken to slow the progress of arthritis. Researchers will also be able to use the tool to track osteoarthritis progression in patients, which may lead to the development of new methods of treatment for damaged cartilage.
