Researchers have developed a new microscopic version of the computerized tomography (CT) scan that has given them new insight into how bones, shells, and other hard structures in animals are formed. Microcomputer tomography is a higher-resolution version of conventional CT technology that construct three-dimensional images of structures too small to be viewed by a traditional CT microscope. Understanding biomineralization, the process by which bones and shells are formed,  may help researchers better understand the process of human bone loss, and may aid in the development of new treatments to stop or reverse bone loss. The ultimate goal for researchers is to discover how creatures such as starfish and newts are able to regenerate amputated limbs.
