From the Popular Press: What Your Patients are Reading:

October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day, which is being backed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and 188 member societies. These organizations are calling for a mobilization of public opinion to generate change in osteoporosis healthcare policies. World Osteoporosis Day is being celebrated around the globe with various public events, including seminars, workshops, public walks, and health fairs. The IOF’s slogan, “Stand Tall: Speak out for your bones” urges the public to take responsibility for their bone health by partnering with national organizations and advocate for healthcare policy change. Due to the increasing number of elderly people, the number of osteoporotic fractures is expected to increase two- to three-fold over the course of the next few decades. The current prognosis for women is that 1 in 3 will develop osteoporosis, while 1 in 5 men will be affected by the disease. With a major increase in these numbers forecasted, it will take a significant toll on healthcare systems worldwide. IOF is campaigning to educate both the public and policy makers about the looming threat of osteoporosis in an effort to curb the number of people who will develop osteoporosis, while at the same time adjusting healthcare policy to care for those who do.
