Falls are the leading cause of injury to the elderly, with an estimated 1 in every 3 Americans over the age of 65 experiencing at least one fall. Falls can often lead to a decline in general health for the elderly, who may have trouble ever completely recovering from the injuries they suffer. A simple home safety review can cut the odds of experiencing a fall, as well as practicing other preventive health measures. Having an annual physical and eye exam is recommended for seniors, as is participation in an exercise program that will help maintain agility, balance, and strength. Eating a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D helps maintain bone strength. Wearing properly fitting shoes with nonskid soles at all times can also reduce the risk of falls—walking around in socks can easily cause someone to slip and fall. Adequate lighting in the home is also important, including nightlights. Keeping a clutter-free home free of obstacles will also reduce a senior’s risk of falls, as will handrails in appropriate areas. Following these safety measures can significantly reduce a senior’s risk for falls, and thus maintain their health and possibly prolong their life.
