New from PubMed:
Osteoporosis is typically portrayed as a disease that often afflicts women, but seldom affects men. Researchers administered a bone health questionnaire to 272 men to gauge their beliefs about osteoporosis, its risk factors, and lifestyle habits that affect bone health. The majority of respondents reported that they believed they were unlikely to develop osteoporosis, and that if they did develop the condition, it would be less severe than in women. They also reported a belief that osteoporosis is preventable, but were unable to list many risk factors. The male respondents disclosed that their lifestyle habits were below the suggested recommendations when it came to behavior that could prevent osteoporosis. The researchers concluded that the questionnaire results indicate a need to increase men’s awareness of osteoporosis, its risk factors, and ways to promote bone health.
